I also suspended my service when I was moving. I attempted to cancel but was threatened with the $20/mth cancellation fees (over $400 at the time). I told the rep that I was moving and didn't know what my new address was going to be. I was assured that I could suspend my service and re-start it at my new address. I then received a bill for $186 for fees for a month when I wasn't even living at the address and had the receiver in the trunk of my car. The bill stated that services were "automatically" restarted, even though I was not living at the address. I never received a notice of automatic restart of my services. They absolutely refused to eliminate or reduce the $125 bill for the month, although they did not provide 1 cent of service.
When I called, the Retention Representative could not tell me why I didn't receive a notice for automatic restart and that the restart was based on my agreeing to suspend for three months only. When I asked to see a notice/documentation of where I had agree to this automatic restart, she told me that it was between the representative and I by spoken agreement, although I specifically recalled stating that I would have to call to restart my service after I moved into a different residence.
The Retention Representative was not helpful at all. When I asked to cancel my service, I was informed that I must pay my $400 bill within 20 days and that I would also be charged for the receiver if I didn't send it back immediately.
Bottom line: They manipulate you with supposed "deals" and use that to charge more. They tell you that you must wait to cancel and call back later, and they have thinly veiled threats about the immediacy of your payment when you do cancel.
